What honing does
Honing is a geometry operation, not a cleaning process. The bore is measured for roundness, taper, and surface finish. Abrasive stones then correct the bore to a specific profile — the geometry and surface finish that a hydraulic seal requires to function correctly and reach full service life.
A bore that is scored, oval, or tapered will destroy a new seal within weeks of installation, regardless of seal quality or material. Replacing the seal without addressing bore condition is not a repair.
Every bore that passes through the Santoo workshop is measured before honing, honed to OEM geometry, and measured again before the rebuild proceeds. Tolerance is confirmed against the work order — not estimated.
Bore conditions that require honing
- Surface scoring from abrasive particulate contamination
- Ovality from asymmetric side-loading during service
- Taper from differential wear along the bore length
- Chrome layer degradation on the bore wall
- Any bore where previous honing was performed without documented measurement
Facility note
One of the few single-pass honing facilities of this bore range and stroke capacity in the GCC. The machine is custom-built for the demands of regional heavy industry and handles the large-bore, long-stroke cylinders common in marine, cement, and oil and gas applications.
